Tangier Port Transformation: From Industrial Hub to Luxury Cruise Destination

The project to redevelop the port area of Tangier City is taking off. The port of the "Pearl of the North" will soon be transformed into a reference port for welcoming cruise and pleasure boats in the Mediterranean.
"The Tanger Med port complex, an industrial giant, has allowed the port of Tangier City to be freed from the handling of goods by integrating all the port handling industries of the Ville port," explains Mohamed Maghazi, commander of the port of Tangier City in an interview with Médias24. This gives it a tourist vocation. Thanks to a project to redevelop the port area, Tangier City will soon be transformed into a reference port for welcoming cruise and pleasure boats in the Mediterranean. "The main objectives assigned to the port of Tangier City, as part of the project to redevelop the port area, are to be a reference port for welcoming cruise and pleasure boats in the Mediterranean, and above all, to ensure sustainable reception operations while respecting the environment," says Maghazi.
Pleasure boating, cruising and fishing are the three main axes of the port redevelopment project in Tangier City. Regarding the first axis, the commander of the "Pearl of the North" port said that the city of Tangier has the largest marina at the national level, with a capacity of 1,400 berths. Another component of the "pleasure boating" axis: a real estate project that covers 28 hectares, with a built-up area of 28,000 m². It is planned to build two 5-star hotels with a capacity of 1,200 beds, as well as the construction of a conference palace with a capacity of 1,500 seats and a mall.
Addressing the second axis, Maghazi specifies that the port of Tangier City has undergone major infrastructure extension work, which has enabled it to meet the needs of the cruise industry and be able to accommodate the largest cruise ships in the world up to 360 m in length. On the last axis, the official said that the city of Tangier is equipped with one of the largest fishing ports in the kingdom, with a capacity adapted to the activity at the regional level.
To recall, the project to redevelop the port area of Tangier City is part of the royal vision for intelligent, sustainable, wealth-creating and environmentally friendly territorial development. It is one of the projects that have marked Morocco over the past two decades.
