To ensure the crossing to Algeciras, the organizer recruited young drivers. Seven of them, currently in detention, admitted during questioning that they received 3,000 dirhams per trip. Their task was simply to pick up the vehicle in Morocco and hand it over to a contact on Spanish soil, without paying any additional fees. The investigation also led to the arrest of a craftsman who manufactures license plates. He was implicated after designing the fraudulent plates for the convoys.
Before the magistrate, these small-time operators firmly deny any voluntary involvement in an international mafia. The young drivers claim they were manipulated, believing they were simply making routine vehicle deliveries. This vast scam has caused unprecedented financial losses for Tangier car dealers and rental companies.
