Tangier Faces Budget Crisis as 70% of Residents Evade Municipal Taxes

430 million DH. This is the annual envelope dedicated to the cleaning service of the city of Detroit. Initially set at 170 million DH, it has increased to 300 million DH, to which is added the budget of 130 million DH dedicated to the new landfill.
According to Al Akhbar, this amount corresponds to 60% of the municipal budget. Local authorities deplore the non-participation of citizens. For municipal councilor Hassan Belkhide, the collection of taxes has become a real nightmare for the municipality of Tangier. According to him, only the municipality of Tangier bears such an expense. In his view, only 30% of the inhabitants honor the payment of local taxes, against 70% who do not want to pay them (including residents of upscale neighborhoods, cafes, restaurants or even classified hotels).
This subject, recalls the daily, is the subject of discussions at the Ministry of the Interior. The services of this department are urging the municipality to be more ingenious in recovering these tens of millions of DH from these hotel establishments and private institutions and companies.
