Tangier to Create New Industrial Zone for Textile SMEs Following Deadly Workshop Tragedy

The tragedy that occurred on Monday, February 8 in the clandestine textile workshop in Tangier, causing the death of 28 employees, has forced the local authorities to urgently decide to create a new industrial zone, respecting the safety standards in force.
Following this tragedy, the municipality held several meetings with professional associations, the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services, and its other partners. An important decision sanctioned this series of meetings. It is the creation of a new industrial zone for the benefit of textile SMEs. It will be installed on an area of 17 hectares, and will group all the textile factories in frameworks adapted to their production capacities and the number of their personnel.
According to a survey carried out after the occurrence of the tragedy, about ten textile units had settled in this residential area of the city center. They will all be transferred to the site of the industrial zone, on the outskirts.
The Moroccan Association of Graduates of Textile and Clothing Institutes (AMALITH) had launched a petition to ask the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Regional Council to set up a new industrial zone for the benefit of textile-clothing SMEs and to promote innovation programs and the creation of new national brands.
