Tangier Cracks Down on Illegal Sidewalk Seating, Sparking Business Outcry

The operations to free up public space continue in Morocco. On Monday, the authorities of Tangier proceeded to seize the chairs, tables and signs of shops and restaurants illegally installed on the sidewalks of the city.
The operation started in Boukhalef, on the road to the airport. The authorities, in collaboration with elements of the auxiliary forces and the police, seized chairs, tables and advertising signs, which were sent to the municipal depot, in application of a decision by the prefecture of Tanger-Assilah.
This operation is not without consequences for the owners of these shops. This situation affects our sources of income, they confided to the media Rue20, claiming to have obtained legal authorizations to settle on these public spaces. A claim rejected by municipal sources, who point out that the licenses are temporary and that some restaurants, cafes and shops exploit the sidewalks and even the green spaces in front of their stores.
