Tangier Cleanliness Crisis After Royal Visit Sparks Urgent Action

Tangier is going through a delicate moment. As the city welcomes many visitors at the start of summer, the issue of cleanliness, waste, and public lighting is putting the municipality under pressure.

The president of the municipal council, Mounir Limouri, reportedly faced harsh criticism from senior officials due to the deterioration of urban cleanliness and several malfunctions observed during the recent visit of King Mohammed VI to Tangier.

According to sources cited by Hespress, this pressure prompted the mayor to urgently convene officials from the company responsible for delegated waste management. During this meeting, he reportedly asked them to comply with the specifications and strengthen waste collection in different neighborhoods.

Center cleaned, neighborhoods neglected

But the measures taken to correct the situation reportedly caused another problem. Cleaning teams concentrated on the city center and main thoroughfares, at the expense of certain peripheral neighborhoods. Result: several elected officials now face direct complaints from residents.

The heat recorded in recent days has worsened the situation. In several areas, the accumulation of household waste, delays in collection, and lack of container cleaning have promoted bad odors and the presence of insects.

The nuisances are not limited to garbage alone. Sewers and pipes also emit strong odors in frequented sectors, particularly near the railway station and even near the municipal palace, where open sewage flows.

Public lighting is also part of the issues that irritate. Several major streets remain poorly lit. Elected officials regularly mention these failures during municipal meetings, without definitive solutions.
