Tangier: cafes and businesses ordered to clear the sidewalks

Tangier declares war on traffic jams on Avenue Royaume d’Arabie Saoudite. To widen this congested artery, the authorities are taking drastic action: they are ordering the immediate evacuation of illegal terraces and scheduling the demolition of a building belonging to a bank.

The local authorities are leading the offensive on the ground. The agents have notified an ultimatum to the owners of cafes and businesses that encroach on the public domain. The message is clear: voluntarily step back or face legal action. Faced with this pressure, several well-known establishments have already begun to dismantle their installations on the sidewalks to avoid the sanction.

This liberation of space is preparing a large-scale construction project. The road will gain six meters in width on the section connecting the Banque Populaire roundabout to the taxi station. A second phase, scheduled after the Africa Cup, will extend the work to the Amendis agency in Bni Makada. The objective is to improve traffic flow on one of the most congested arteries in the metropolis.

The black spot of the Banque Populaire roundabout will undergo a radical transformation. The redevelopment plan includes the outright demolition of the building housing the bank branch. This operation will allow the creation of a new traffic lane to turn before the traffic light, a drastic measure intended to definitively decongest this vital intersection.
