Tangier Cracks Down on Illegal Beachfront Structures in Major Cleanup

In Tangier, the major cleanup of public space continues. After putting pressure on real estate developers, the wali of the region, Younes Tazi, is now tackling another front, and not the least: cafes, restaurants and hotels that have made themselves comfortable along the highly popular corniche. The order is clear: the public domain, often occupied illegally, must be freed without delay.

Demolition machines have already gone into action in certain areas. In their sights are all extensions, verandas or constructions erected on sidewalks, or even encroaching on the roadway. The areas located between Avenue Oujda and Avenue Mohammed VI, near Malabata beach, are particularly affected by these initial operations. The message is intended to be firm and is addressed to all.

Local authorities have received strict instructions to implement this decision, even if some establishments brandish old authorizations. The wali’s stated objective is twofold: to give a more harmonious and uniform appearance to the corniche, but also, and above all, to guarantee freedom of movement for pedestrians. This is a sensitive point, regularly raised by residents and local associations who denounced a creeping privatization of the coastline.

While the authorities insist that the decision is "irrevocable," they expect resistance and strong tensions with professionals in the sector. Putting an end to sometimes long-standing habits and generalizing this takeover across the entire corniche could well prove to be a real challenge.
