Tangier becomes the most expensive city in Morocco

Tangier becomes the most expensive city in Morocco, rising to the ninth rank of the most costly cities on the African continent. The Pearl of the North now surpasses Casablanca and Rabat in the national cost of living index.

The 2026 assessment of the cost of living in Morocco reveals an unprecedented hierarchy where Tangier takes the lead with 36.12 points, ahead of Casablanca, Rabat and Marrakech. This position makes the city of the Strait one of the ten most expensive hubs in Africa, although it remains behind metropolises like Abidjan, Pretoria or Johannesburg. Conversely, the bottom of the continental ranking is occupied by cities in Madagascar, Egypt and Libya, marking a clear contrast with the trajectory of the most dynamic Moroccan urban centers.

At the continental scale, Morocco stabilizes in the sixteenth position with an average index of 31.39, far behind the Seychelles, the Democratic Republic of the Congo or Senegal which dominate the African ranking. In the global panorama, Tangier and its Moroccan counterparts are in the middle of the table, occupying ranks between 376th and 405th out of nearly 480 cities.

This global positioning remains moderate compared to the record indices of Bermuda or the Cayman Islands, but confirms that Morocco is among the African countries hosting the most expensive urban centers.
