Tangier Authorities Crack Down on Corniche Violations, Citing Environmental Concerns

During an unannounced field visit, a commission formed of representatives from the authorities noted numerous environmental violations and non-compliance with commitments made in 2018 by certain operators working on the Tangier corniche.

A mixed commission composed of an official from the urban planning service of the Wilaya of the Tangier region, an official from the economic service, regional engineers, as well as representatives from civil protection and the Tangier municipality, is ensuring that shisha cafes and nightclubs installed on the corniche are not maintained, given their advanced state of disrepair. This is contrary to the wishes of some operators working on the corniche who "are trying to put pressure to stay in place". On the ground, it noted numerous environmental violations and non-compliance with commitments made in 2018 by certain operators, reports Al Akhbar.

Summoned to the headquarters of the Wilaya of the Tangier region, several companies benefiting from premises on this corniche had to present their authorizations. It was discovered that some of them obtained permits after the demolition of old corniche installations, under dubious circumstances. This raises questions about the conditions under which these beneficiaries were selected. As the procedure was executed after the passage of a previous commission mandated for the same mission. After transmission of a complete file to the Wali of the region, the necessary decisions will be taken.

This visit by the commission is part of the corniche development project. Several million dirhams have been allocated to the rehabilitation of the area.
