Newly Built $20 Million Moroccan Beachfront Promenade Crumbles Before Opening

While its official inauguration has not yet taken place, the Corniche of Mohammédia is already in ruins. This is damaging the image of this coastal city and driving away tourists.

A budget exceeding 200 million dirhams for nothing? Overflowing trash cans, cracked sidewalks and ruined urban furniture, several vandalized facilities, filth... The Corniche of Mohammédia is no longer a symbol of tranquility and conviviality. This emblematic place is in a pitiful state. During a recent visit, the new governor of the prefecture of Mohammédia went to see for himself the disastrous state of the new Corniche.

"The new Corniche has seen its facilities vandalized even before its official inauguration, it now appears as a heap of ruins and abandoned dumpsters," confirmed an environmental activist in Mohammédia. He explained that the beach sand falsely presented itself as sand, when in reality it is a mixture dominated by rubble from the old Corniche, so much so that earth and stones have taken over.

According to him, construction materials and machinery have been deposited on the Corniche, children’s play equipment has been damaged, and as for sanitary facilities, there is no choice but to hide to relieve oneself, which embarrasses many families. He laments: "We hoped that the new Corniche would make us forget the past of anarchic constructions and repair the shortcomings of irresponsible management, but over time the deficiencies of the project’s preliminary study have unfortunately appeared."

Based on these observations, he calls for correcting the dysfunctions and invites his compatriots to a responsible awareness nurtured by the spirit of citizenship. A lawyer and member of the Communal Council of Mohammédia quoted by Hespress, confirms: "the situation is catastrophic at the Corniche level, and damages the image of the entire city". According to him, "this space requires rehabilitation despite the billions of dirhams spent on it over the years". A budget exceeding 200 million dirhams has been allocated to the development of the Corniche.

For the lawyer, this space, frequented by the city’s inhabitants and their visitors, requires surveillance via a company in charge of this, in order to preserve its facilities and equipment. "This catastrophic situation now requires the allocation of budgets to renovate the Corniche, repair its vandalized equipment, and bring it back to life, so that it regains an appearance worthy of the city," added the communal elected official.
