Tangier Airport Expands, Streamlines Operations to Meet Growing Air Traffic Demands

Tangier Ibn Batouta Airport is adapting to the increase in air traffic by reconfiguring its international and domestic departure circuit. Inaugurated on June 11, 2024, this project aims to streamline passenger flows and improve their travel experience.

Domestic flight passengers now have a dedicated 300 m² departure lounge with two boarding gates. This separation of flows allows for better organization and time savings for all passengers.

The hall dedicated to international flights has been expanded and equipped with three new boarding gates. Security checks (passports, screening inspection) have also been strengthened to ensure optimal safety. A 460 m² commercial area has also been developed for the comfort of passengers.

This reorganization is part of a "Quick wins" program implemented by the National Airports Office (ONDA) to meet the growth in air traffic in Tangier. This short-term solution makes it possible to increase the airport’s capacity from 1.5 to 2.3 million passengers per year, pending the construction of a new terminal planned for 2028.

The first results of the "Quick Wins" program are already encouraging, says the management. The number of domestic passengers has jumped by 67% at the end of May 2024 compared to the same period last year. The number of domestic flights has also increased from 12 to 24 per week.

Beyond increasing capacity, the "Quick Wins" program also aims to improve passenger traffic fluidity and their travel experience. ONDA also plans to renew airport equipment and devices to strengthen the safety and security of operations.

As part of Morocco’s preparations to host the 2030 World Cup, ONDA plans to build a new terminal in the medium term. The architectural studies for this project have already been completed and the launch of the call for tenders for the construction work is scheduled for the coming months.
