The National Airports Office (ONDA) is preparing to launch the development and expansion works of Tangier Ibn Battouta International Airport. This project aims to increase the airport’s reception capacity and strengthen its security.
The project will be carried out on an area of approximately 199 hectares. The work concerns the creation of basic infrastructure including an aircraft parking lot, connection ramps on an area of approximately 160,000 square meters, as well as the extension of the airport fence over a length of 6 kilometers.
The project also provides for the construction of a passenger terminal, a new control tower, a parking lot that can accommodate up to 1,400 cars, as well as the development of the road leading to the airport. It aims to increase the reception capacity of Tangier airport from 1.2 million passengers to 4.4 million passengers per year by 2050, and to bring it up to international safety standards.
ONDA has announced the selection of five companies to strengthen the security of the airport. They will be responsible for providing and installing state-of-the-art equipment such as high-resolution surveillance cameras, X-ray machines, explosive detection systems, and training security personnel in the use of this new equipment.
The security of the airports in Fez and Oujda will also be strengthened, we learn from ONDA, which specifies that these actions are part of an overall strategy to improve security standards in Moroccan airports, in accordance with international standards.
