Tanger Med Port Sees Record Growth: Container Traffic Surges 38%, Vehicle Exports Rise

The port of Tanger Med recorded good performance last year. In total, 4,801,713 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) were handled, an exceptional increase of 38% compared to 2018.
A total of 500,465 vehicles were processed on the two vehicle terminals of the port of Tanger Med in 2019, an increase of 5% compared to the previous year, indicates the Tanger Med Port Authority (TMPA) in a press release. These are 380,784 Renault vehicles, of which 349,050 are for export, and 112,857 vehicles handled in the Common user terminal.
Regarding TIR truck traffic, 357,214 TIR trucks were processed in 2019 at the port of Tanger Med, an increase of 9% compared to 2018, TMPA said, specifying that exports are mainly driven by industrial and agri-food products. As for passenger activity, it remained stable during the year 2019, with a transit of 2,775,402 passengers (-1%) and 697,324 cars (+1%) compared to 2018.
In 2019, 10 new operators started their activities in the port logistics zone of Tanger Med. Among them, international players such as DHL, NIPPON EXPRESS, and KASAI.
"All of these achievements reinforce Tanger Med’s position as a platform of choice at the service of the Moroccan economy, and as a major logistics hub for global trade," assures TMPA.
