Study: 70% of Moroccans Plan to Travel After COVID-19 Lockdown Ends

Tourism is the priority for Moroccans after confinement. They are eagerly awaiting the lifting of confinement, recently postponed, in order to rediscover the pleasures of travel.

70% of Moroccans plan to travel after confinement, while 60.6% say they want to wait a month before traveling, reveals a study by the Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT). On the one hand, Moroccans aged 35 to 55 prefer family trips of an average of four people, while among the socio-professional categories (SPC), 18-24 year olds and over 55s are more numerous to want to travel as a couple, while 25 to 34 year olds prefer to travel alone. On the other hand, the reasons for traveling differ according to individual priorities. ONMT estimates at 36.5% those who travel to visit family, while 29.1% of Moroccans prefer beach destinations, and 26.6% eco-friendly trips.

Tourism alone represents 10% of the Moroccan economy, thanks to the foreign exchange it generates for the country. For this reason, tourism stakeholders are encouraging citizens to travel within their country as soon as the state of health emergency is lifted.

It should be recalled that the closure of borders and the suspension of flights in mid-March have considerably reduced Morocco’s tourism activity in recent months compared to the same period last year.
