Stolen Cars from Morocco Seized on Route to Algeria via Spain

The investigation began last November after authorities reported a “significant increase” in vehicles bearing temporary license plates during boarding operations. Agents from the tax and border investigation unit then identified major irregularities in the traceability of several passenger cars destined for the Algerian market.

According to the authorities, the modus operandi involved bringing stolen cars onto Moroccan soil in Europe in order to alter their invoices and official certificates. This manipulation was intended to “simulate a lawful European origin” to facilitate their transit to Algeria and bypass checks on the goods’ actual origin.

The operation led to the arrest of six individuals, aged between 32 and 45, who are now facing charges of document falsification. Seven vehicles of various makes were seized by police just before boarding and will be returned to their rightful owners in Morocco at the end of the judicial proceedings.

Spanish police stressed that the case demonstrates the importance of documentary and customs checks at national ports. They also highlighted the need for increased international cooperation to effectively combat fraud and the illicit trafficking of vehicles between continents.
