Stolen license plates, disguised chassis: stolen cars in Italy intercepted at the Moroccan border
Routine checks at the border between Morocco and Ceuta resulted, this Sunday, in a double seizure of vehicles. The Civil Guard agents, assigned to the Customs Tax Surveillance Unit of the Tarajal, proceeded to arrest three individuals. They are suspected of theft or misappropriation of motor vehicles after attempting to cross the border post from Moroccan territory.
The first intervention took place around 10 a.m. A vehicle occupied by two men, one of Spanish nationality and the other Italian, attracted the attention of the officials. During the checks carried out on the police terminals, the agents found that the car was listed in the Schengen Information System (SIS) with a report of theft or loss recorded in Italy on January 19. The technical examination also revealed the absence of the chassis number identification sticker (VIN) and a suspicion of stolen license plates.
The second vehicle was intercepted shortly after, at 12:40 p.m. The driver, an Italian national, was driving a car whose international search warrant was confirmed by the police cooperation mechanisms. The report, the date of which coincided with the previous case, specifically mentioned the removal of the vehicle’s original license plates.
To finalize these procedures, steps have been taken with the S.I.R.E.N.E. office to obtain official confirmation of the search warrants. The three suspects were made available to the Court of First Instance and Investigation No. 6 of Ceuta. The seized vehicles are now the subject of judicial proceedings to determine the networks involved in these illicit transfers between Europe and the Maghreb.
