US State Department Raises Travel Alert Level for Morocco

The United States of America has just followed in the footsteps of the United Kingdom by increasing the level of alert regarding the Morocco destination. This is for the attention of American travelers.

There are four levels of alert in the system used by the USA for the attention of American travelers wishing to go to a foreign country. Level 1 concerns "normal conditions". For its part, level 2 indicates that "more caution" is required. Level 3 simply calls to "Reconsider traveling". And finally, of course, level 4 clearly says: "Avoid traveling".

Trips to Morocco had then been entitled to level 1, that is to say that one could count on "normal conditions" there. But that has just changed. For Uncle Sam, American travelers should now "exercise more caution".

The US Office of Consular Affairs explains on its official website: "Terrorist groups continue to plan attacks in Morocco and could strike at any time, targeting tourist sites, transportation hubs, markets and shopping centers as well as government facilities."

In addition, American tourists and travelers in general are asked to "remain vigilant in areas frequented by Westerners, avoid crowds, register with the "Smart Traveler" (STEP) program to receive alerts and facilitate their location in case of emergency, consult the Twitter and Facebook accounts of the State Department".

And finally, these same travelers would need to have "an emergency plan for unexpected situations".
