Spanish Police Uncover False Paternity Scheme in Melilla Nationality Case

A 24-year-old Spaniard residing in Melilla accepted, for a payment of more than 1,000 euros, to recognize the paternity of the baby of a Moroccan woman who gave birth at the regional hospital of the autonomous city. The young man was arrested by the Unit for the Fight against Illegal Immigration Networks and Forged Documents (UCRIF).
The young man completed all the necessary formalities at the hospital and the civil registry in order to obtain Spanish identity documents for the newborn Moroccan, which would allow the baby and his mother to obtain Spanish nationality and the latter to apply for a work permit and benefit from all the advantages of social security.
The investigation, carried out by the UCRIF agents, revealed that the accused had provided a false paternity recognition, and that the baby’s mother, once the minor had obtained his Spanish identity card and passport, had applied for a residence permit for exceptional circumstances with the Melilla Foreigners’ Office.
According to El Faro de Melilla, the baby’s mother, of Moroccan origin, had already filed a request for a residence permit upon her arrival in Melilla, which had been rejected. The Moroccan woman, as well as her son, were arrested and made available for investigation. A procedure for the deprivation of Spanish nationality of the newborn has been initiated.
