Spanish Truckers Clash with Moroccan Rivals: Safety and Competition Concerns Ignite Road Rage

Spanish truck drivers complain about Moroccan competition. According to them, Moroccan truckers do not respect the maximum speed required and do not master the Spanish traffic code.
Several transport companies in Spain are complaining about the competition from Moroccan truck drivers who, in addition to driving at a maximum speed higher than the authorized one, do not respect rest periods. The latter are accused of modifying the disc on which the tachograph information is recorded, which is not mandatory in Morocco, according to El Debate.
Spanish truckers also denounce the inaction of the Directorate General of Transport (DGT) and the Guardia Civil in the face of these shortcomings of Moroccan truckers. They explain that when these truckers are stopped, they do not have the means to pay the fines imposed on them, which leads the civil guards to let them go.
To date, nearly 20,000 Moroccan truck drivers are working in Spain. Some 80,000 others benefit from temporary circulation permits in the Iberian Peninsula.
