Spanish Man Faces Trial for Spreading False Video About Moroccan Minor on Twitter

The Barcelona court is trying on Tuesday a Twitter user accused of posting a false video attributing the paternity of an assault that had actually occurred in China to a Moroccan minor. The prosecution is seeking a two-year prison sentence and a fine of 6,480 euros against him.

In this first case of "fake news" discriminating against minors tried in Spain, the defendant is accused of an offense against fundamental rights and public freedoms. In addition to the false video on the Moroccan minor, he had already posted other xenophobic comments and ultra-symbols on his Twitter account, reports 20minutos.

The accused was "motivated by his animosity and rejection of migrants of Moroccan origin" when he posted on July 1, 2019 a video which, according to him, corresponded to a rape that had occurred a few days earlier in Canet de Mar (Barcelona), the prosecution specified in the indictment.

"Here is the video of the Moroccan minor from Canet de Mar, those to whom we will give the little of our resources until they are 23 years old, the children of Pedrito Piscinas... These madmen and these herds of Moroccans will not appear in the media," the accused tweeted in the caption of the 45-second video that has already been viewed 21,900 times.

This video had nothing to do with the assault that occurred in Canet de Mar. It was rather a video of a violent assault on a woman in China that had been disseminated by the Chinese authorities in order to identify the perpetrator through citizen collaboration.
