Spanish Man Arrested for Stabbing Two, Including Moroccan, in Oviedo Attack

The police arrested on Saturday an individual for stabbing two young men, including a Moroccan, in Oviedo, in northwestern Spain. He was remanded in custody by the investigating judge, pending his trial scheduled for October.

The judge decided to remand the accused in custody because of his rather heavy criminal record, the seriousness of the acts he is accused of, and the fact that he could not provide an address to which to send judicial summons. According to his lawyer, Fernando Ángel de la Fuente, this decision of the judge is "a shame", given that his client only acted in self-defense. He also considers "exaggerated" the prosecution’s request to sentence his client to five years in prison for a crime of serious bodily harm, even though he acknowledges that the latter has already been sued more than a dozen times for gender-based violence by his ex-wife, reports La Nueva España.

De la Fuente pleads self-defense for his client. According to him, the two young victims would have tried to steal the accused’s handbag, who defended himself, but not with a knife. The lawyer denies the use of this bladed weapon by his client to stab the alleged victims. "He knew them before, because they had already stolen his wallet on another occasion... When they were found, the weapon was on the ground and before drawing conclusions, fingerprints will have to be taken," the defense explained, claiming that for the moment it is impossible to prove the ownership of the knife.

For their part, the two alleged victims, a 25-year-old man from Oviedo and a Moroccan in his twenties, have only stated that the accused attacked them from behind and that, contrary to the statements of the defense lawyer, they did not know their aggressor. The latter, for his part, declared that he had been attacked with sharp objects such as glass and suffered injuries to his hand, arm and knee.

The two parties will confront their arguments at the trial scheduled for October 21. In the meantime, the police continue to investigate and collect evidence to identify the owner of the bladed weapon, because when the local police elements arrived at the scene of the assault, the two alleged victims as well as the accused were all lying on the ground and none of them was carrying the weapon at that time.

The alleged victims, who received care at the hospital, are doing well and have already returned to their homes. The accused, also injured, was treated by health workers for his injuries to the hand, according to sources close to the case.
