Spanish Intelligence: Morocco Unable to Exploit Hacked Data from PM’s Phone

The Spanish intelligence services categorically rule out the fact that Morocco could have threatened the Spanish government with the data it would have stolen from Pedro Sanchez’s phones that were "hacked" using Pegasus in May 2021. They insist that there was no security breach on their part in the analysis of the phones.

The CNI considers it "quite plausible" that Morocco may have spied on the phones of Sanchez and the Ministers of Defense and Interior, but in no case will it make this information public, assure sources to El Confidencial.

The Pegasus affair shook Sanchez’s trusted man, Félix Bolaños, who had advised to make it public. He will have to provide the judge seized of the case, the political partners and the opposition with information on the sensitive data that would have been recovered from Sanchez’s phones.

Spain has opened a serious diplomatic crisis with Morocco, after the reception of Brahim Ghali, the leader of the Polisario Front, in a hospital in Logroño. This was followed by the migration crisis in Ceuta in May 2021. The crisis with Algeria, for its part, was born after Pedro Sanchez expressed Spain’s support for the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara. Algeria has recently suspended its trade exchanges with Spain, which accuses Russia of having pushed the country to act against it.
