Catalonia's Arabic Language Boom: 1,800 Students Embrace Moroccan Culture in Groundbreaking Educational Program

More than 1,800 students are learning the Arabic language and Moroccan culture in 122 schools in Catalonia this year, as part of an official program conducted in collaboration between the Generalitat and the Kingdom of Morocco.

Entitled "Arabic Language and Moroccan Culture Program" (LACM), the initiative aims to promote the inclusion of students of Moroccan origin while allowing them to preserve their cultural identity.

The uniqueness of this program lies in its model of cooperation. The teachers who deliver the courses come directly from Morocco. They are selected, appointed and paid by the Moroccan Ministry of National Education, through the Hassan II Foundation.

For the 2025-2026 school year, the program has 1,831 enrolled students, a figure described as "provisional" by the Generalitat’s Department of Education, as not all groups have yet started. Of the 122 participating schools and institutes, the vast majority (118) offer these courses as extracurricular activities, while four establishments have integrated them into the students’ regular schedule.

The program is deployed throughout the Catalan territory, with a concentration in certain municipalities. The Baix Llobregat region, for example, has ten establishments and 199 students, the Barcelonès region has eight establishments and 135 students, and Central Catalonia has five establishments for 51 students, according to data provided by the Catalan government.
