Spanish Community Rallies to Support 12-Year-Old Orphaned by Domestic Violence Tragedy

The Generalitat has agreed for the 12-year-old boy, whose Spanish father stabbed his Moroccan-born mother to death in front of him before committing suicide, to be temporarily hosted by a neighbor, close to the family.
The 53-year-old Spanish man stabbed his 38-year-old Moroccan-born wife to death on Sunday in their home in Antella, in front of their 12-year-old son, before committing suicide, recalls Levante. Beyond this latest case of gender-based violence, it is the situation of the minor that is of concern. Witness to the fatal assault of his mother by his father and the suicide of the latter, he received psychological support, as did the other parents and neighbors affected by this tragedy.
Having no relatives in the city, the boy spent Sunday night to Monday with neighbors. The Generalitat has authorized him to remain for the time being with this family, while the Ministry of Equality searches for members of his family. On Monday, the mayor of Antella, Eugenia García, held a meeting with social services and psychologists to coordinate the care of the boy.
In addition to the 12-year-old boy, the Moroccan woman had another 16-year-old son and a daughter who has just reached the age of majority. The two were not present at the home at the time of the events. The town hall of Antella has decreed three days of mourning. This tragedy brings to 28 the number of women victims of gender-based violence this year in Spain and to 33 the number of minors who have become motherless.
