Spanish Army Deployed to Melilla Border for Surveillance and Deterrence

Agents from the General Command of Melilla (army) have been carrying out a mission of control, surveillance and "deterrence" near the border with Morocco for a few days.

This mission on the borders of Morocco is part of the operations of presence and surveillance of the territory, and mainly of certain sensitive areas, assigned to the Spanish Armed Forces in order to "deter" against possible attacks by land, sea and air.

This army group has as its main mission to protect the spaces located in this particularly sensitive area which marks the border between Spain and Morocco, but also between the European Union and Africa. Permanent presence and surveillance missions are regularly carried out near the borders of Ceuta and Melilla with Morocco, confirm military sources to Vozpópuli.

Several units, regiments and battalions are based in the two autonomous cities to carry out these operations on a regular basis. "Every day of the year, at any time of the day, the units and commanders of the operational structure of the Armed Forces are on alert to face any threat to security in the areas of sovereignty and national interest," explains the Defense Staff (EMAD).

The army, air force and navy participate in these operations by deploying material and human resources in these areas considered strategic and of national interest for Spain, such as the rocks and islets near the Moroccan coasts, and the Canary Islands.
