Spanish Army Deploys Tactical Unit to Melilla for Border Surveillance Near Morocco
Sunday 13 April 2025, by
The Spanish army has deployed a tactical sub-group of the regular army group to carry out a reconnaissance and surveillance mission in sensitive areas of Melilla, not far from Morocco.
This mission, conducted by GREG 52 and part of early warning plans, aims to ensure the security of Spanish citizens in these areas and preserve the integrity of Spanish territory against potential threats, according to the Spanish General Staff cited by El Debate. The Spanish army has been carrying out these deterrence and surveillance missions in the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla for several months due to their proximity to Morocco, which claims sovereignty over these enclaves.
The mission carried out by GREG 52 is a routine training exercise aimed at identifying routes in sensitive areas of Melilla and gaining in-depth knowledge of the terrain to prepare against any attack or incident at this land border with Morocco. This mission is essential to maintain "early warning of any threat" and ensure "the freedom and security of all Spaniards," assures the General Staff.
According to data from the Ministry of Defense, GREG 52 is a light infantry unit specialized in urban and rugged terrain combat. This unit was created at the beginning of the 20th century and has always been involved in the defense of Melilla. With this mission conducted at the border with Morocco, the Spanish army shows that it is ready to counter any threat and attempt to destabilize or challenge its territory.
