Spain Bolsters Military Presence at Melilla Border Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Following the recent controversy sparked by the representation of the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla as Moroccan territories on a map of the Alaouite embassy in Spain, the Army has strengthened surveillance at the Melilla border.

This move, communicated by the Defense Staff, is part of the missions of the Land Operational Command aimed at guaranteeing the security of the national territory. Although the Engineering Regiment, based in Melilla, regularly carries out activities of this kind, the timing of this operation, just after the controversy and the visit to Morocco of the acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, draws attention, writes El Debate.

The 8th Engineering Regiment, located at the Capitán Arenas Barracks in Melilla, has the main mission of assisting the Melilla General Command with specialized technical skills. This regiment is equipped with sapper units, specialized explosive ordnance disposal teams, divers and other technical units.

Strict border control is not one of their usual missions. It is the Land Operational Command, in charge of overseeing territorial security operations, that has made the decision to reinforce this following the recent geopolitical tension.
