Spain Bolsters Military Presence in Melilla Amid Territorial Tensions

Spain has deployed units in Melilla to carry out surveillance and deterrence missions aimed at ensuring the security and defense of the autonomous city in the face of Morocco’s persistent claims.

The mixed artillery regiment no. 32 (RAMIX 32) deployed in Melilla, which combines field artillery and anti-aircraft artillery, is supporting other units of the Melilla General Command. Its objective is to strengthen the surveillance of strategic points and the control of access to sensitive areas, in short to guarantee the defense of the autonomous city.

The Spanish army states that these maneuvers are not a response to a specific incident, but are part of the implementation of its annual preparation plan, which aims to strengthen security in areas under Spanish sovereignty, according to La Razon.

This latest surveillance and deterrence mission in Melilla comes in a context of tensions with Morocco, which has for years been persistently claiming its sovereignty over the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, as well as over the Spanish islands and rocks.

For its part, Melilla has improved its surveillance system by purchasing drones, advanced sensors and rapid response systems in order to strengthen border security and ensure the protection of Melilla’s citizens against any attempt at destabilization. Through these actions, Spain is showing its determination to ensure the defense of the autonomous city.
