Spain sends a warship near Morocco

The permanent military presence on this islet has been in place since 1997 to ensure maritime control and the protection of national security interests. Its geographical position, halfway between the Iberian Peninsula and the North African coast, makes it an advanced observation post on one of the main maritime routes connecting the Mediterranean to the Atlantic via the Strait of Gibraltar.

The importance of the enclave was reassessed in 2024 following the arrival of 200 migrants from the Moroccan coast. During a visit to the naval detachment, the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, described this area as a "national priority". The military personnel stationed on site maintain constant vigilance to combat irregular immigration, drug trafficking, and potential threats to freedom of navigation.

From an operational standpoint, the Navy detachment ensures the operability of the facilities and acts as an early warning center. The information gathered on the island is integrated into national cooperation mechanisms with the Maritime Rescue and State Security Forces. This presence also has a deterrent character, aimed at strengthening the effective exercise of sovereignty in a sensitive area of the geostrategic environment of southern Europe.

The maintenance of this system in such an isolated enclave requires constant logistical effort, marked by regular rotations of specialized personnel. This defense mission is part of a context of increased surveillance of maritime borders, accentuated by the global increase in naval traffic and the evolution of security challenges in the Mediterranean.
