Spain Deploys Warship to Patrol Gibraltar Strait and Alboran Sea

Spain has deployed the maritime action ship Tornado in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea, near Moroccan waters, to carry out a surveillance and deterrence mission.
The Tornado left the naval base in Rota (Cádiz) to carry out this mission in the maritime spaces under Spanish sovereignty, mainly in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea. This operation aims to guarantee the security and freedom of navigation in these strategic waters. The deployment of this ship in the waters near Morocco is a sign of Spain’s commitment to defending its sovereignty over these maritime spaces, reports Huffpost.
The Tornado, belonging to the naval command of the Canary Islands based in Las Palmas, is dedicated to various maritime security missions, including verification and control of maritime traffic, fisheries surveillance and control, as well as the fight against maritime pollution. In collaboration with the security forces, it also carries out operations against drug trafficking and terrorism.
As part of this mission in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea, the Tornado will proceed to verify and control maritime traffic in order to guarantee freedom of navigation, the Spanish defense staff (EMAD) said. The ship is expected to make port calls in Algeciras (October 10-11) and Malaga (October 18-20). Open house days will be organized on these occasions to allow the public to visit the ship and discover its capabilities and functions.
