Spain’s Lamine Yamal Makes History: Youngest Scorer Cements National Team Future

Lamine Yamal scored the first goal for Spain against Cyprus last Thursday. In three matches with La Roja, the young striker of Moroccan origin has now scored his second goal after the one he scored against Georgia in September. He should play his fourth match this Sunday, definitively closing the door to Morocco.
Lamine Yamal is a very talented player who is breaking precocity records. The young player could have been part of José Lana’s list to play the U17 World Cup with Spain. But his performances with the Barça first team have propelled him into the senior national team. Called up for the match against Georgia in September, the Moroccan striker made history, becoming at just 16 years and 57 days the youngest player to make his debut with the Spanish national team and also the youngest scorer for La Roja, recalls Sport.es.
Lamine has already played three official matches with Spain and scored his second goal against Cyprus (3-1) on Thursday. The young player opened the scoring in the fifth minute, contributing to Spain’s victory. According to FIFA regulations, Yamal is definitively a Spanish international after his three official matches with Spain and will no longer be able to change his sporting nationality. He could play his fourth match with Spain in Valladolid this Sunday, definitively escaping Morocco who unsuccessfully tried to convince him to join the Atlas Lions.
Yamal has the confidence of Luis de la Fuente and, barring any surprises, will participate this summer in the Europa League at just 16 years old. He will blow out his 17 candles on July 13, the eve of the final of the competition in Berlin. He is also in Xavi Hernández’s plans at Barça. The two coaches work in synergy and closely follow the young player’s progress. In Barcelona, he has already played 17 matches and started 8. With Spain, he has never played the full 90 minutes. Yamal is in a growth phase and still has a lot to learn and demonstrate.
