Spain Set to Call Up Lamine Yamal for Euro 2024 Qualifiers, Dashing Morocco's Hopes

Lamine Yamal should be part of the list that Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, is about to publish for the matches against Cyprus (Limassol, November 16) and Georgia (Valladolid, November 19). This call-up of the young player, if confirmed, would ruin all of Morocco’s hopes of seeing Yamal join the Atlas Lions.

De la Fuente will publish on Friday the list of 23 Spanish players called up for the last qualifying matches for Euro 2024. With its victory against Norway in Oslo, Spain is already qualified for the final phase of the continental tournament. Its next matches against Cyprus (November 16) and Georgia (November 19) are a priori without stakes, but offer it the opportunity to consolidate its position as group leader.

The name of Lamine Yamal, injured and absent against Norway, should appear on this list. The participation of the Moroccan-born striker in one of these matches would make him a Spanish international, according to FIFA rules which set at three the number of matches to be played by a dual national for a national team to definitively choose his sporting nationality.

The 16-year-old player had already played the first leg matches against Cyprus and Georgia, becoming the youngest player to make his senior debut for the Spanish national team. His call-up for the return matches scheduled for next Thursday and Sunday would definitively close the door to Morocco, which is very interested in the Barça prodigy and has unsuccessfully tried to convince him to join the Atlas Lions.
