Spain's Diplomatic Effort to Ease Morocco-Algeria Tensions Falls Short at Mediterranean Forum

Still concerned by the crisis between Morocco and Algeria, Spain tried to bring together the Foreign Ministers of the two countries, on the sidelines of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Forum, launched this Monday in Barcelona. Unfortunately, the two personalities will not attend this meeting.

The Foreign Ministers of Morocco, Nasser Bourita, and Algeria, Ramtane Lamamra, contacted their Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares, by telephone to apologize for their absence from this forum which coincides with the China-Africa Summit opening this same Monday in Dakar.

Albares thought he could take the opportunity to try to resume contact between Morocco and Algeria. The two countries are experiencing a serious crisis, which led Algeria to break off its relations with Morocco last August.

Bourita’s participation in this Barcelona meeting would also have made it possible to make the rapprochement between Spain and Morocco more visible, after the telephone exchange Albares had had with his Moroccan counterpart last September. The two men had agreed to meet "very soon".
