Spain and Morocco in Talks to Revive Key Maritime Route Between Canary Islands and Tarfaya

Spain has just engaged in discussions with Morocco to reactivate the maritime link between Tarfaya and Fuerteventura.

This route, suspended since 2008, is the shortest between the islands and Morocco, only 90 kilometers apart. The resumption of this maritime route represents a major challenge for the region, according to the local press.

Advances are expected during the next meeting on January 11 and 12. On this occasion, a Moroccan delegation, representing the maritime and port sectors, will visit the Port del Rosario in Fuerteventura. These exchanges aim to materialize the Canary Islands-Tarfaya maritime connection project, a potentially beneficial link for the two regions.

The Canary Islands government is closely coordinating with the State to ensure the viability of the project. A preparatory meeting is planned to examine the logistical aspects and necessary resources. The focus is on the preparation of health services and border controls, in order to ensure a harmonious implementation.

According to Luis Padilla, Director General of Relations with Africa of the Government of the Canary Islands, this initiative is strategic, aimed at strengthening trade and tourism exchanges, highlighting the importance of mastering all operational and logistical aspects to avoid any potential obstacles.

For the record, trade between the Canary Islands and Morocco is mainly focused on the export of iron, steel, fuels and mineral oils, and the import of marine products and aluminum.
