Morocco to Reopen Maritime Link Between Canary Islands and Western Sahara

The Moroccan Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohammed Abdeljalil, confirmed in a letter to the President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, the kingdom’s interest in reactivating the maritime line between the port of Rosario, in Fuerteventura, and Tarfaya.

The letter received by the President of the Canary Islands follows his visit to Morocco in mid-March, at the head of a delegation of Canarian businessmen. This trip by Torres marks "an important step in strengthening commercial and logistical ties between Morocco and Spain," said the Moroccan Minister of Transport in the letter, announcing the holding, on June 2 in Morocco, of a working meeting between the parties.

Representatives of the Regional Executive, including the Minister of Economy, Elena Máñez and the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Gustavo Santana, as well as Canarian businessmen interested in the reactivation of the maritime line between the port of Rosario and Tarfaya, will participate in this session.

During his first visit to Morocco in March, Torres met with the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, the President of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, and the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohammed Abdeljalil.

Torres had announced on the occasion the launch as of July of three new routes of the Canarian airline Binter to the Moroccan cities of Essaouira, Tangier and Guelmim, and stressed the commitment of the Canarian and Moroccan authorities to reactivate the maritime line between Fuerteventura and Tarfaya.
