Severe Drought Threatens Water Supply in Morocco’s Largest Cities

The fear of thirst looms over the cities of Rabat and Casablanca, hit by a drought that has lasted for several months. An emergency plan is being implemented by the authorities.
Supplied with drinking water by the Bouregreg-Chaouia water basin, the two cities risk running out of water, as the dam is experiencing a 94% deficit this year, warns Al Akhbar.
This situation is due, of course, to the drought affecting the entire country, but also to the consumption habits of industrialists who use a lot of water, the newspaper points out, noting that if nothing is done, water will be scarce or even unavailable, after two consecutive years without rain.
To meet this major challenge, the authorities in Casablanca have initiated a project to strengthen the drinking water supply of Greater Casablanca through Bouregreg connections, in substitution for part of the water from Oum Er-Rbia.
