Senior Polisario Front UN Envoy Ahmed Boukhari Dies After Long Illness

The Permanent Representative of the Polisario Front to the UN, Ahmed Boukhari, died on Tuesday, April 1, from the "consequences of a long illness".
According to a document transmitted to AFP, a national mourning of seven days has been decreed from this Wednesday, April 2. "The Sahrawi people have undoubtedly lost one of their most valiant and faithful men," the same document states.
For Abdelkader Etaleb, Sahrawi "ambassador" in Algiers, the death of this prominent figure of the Polisario represents a loss difficult to fill. According to him, the deceased played a crucial role in the negotiations, the legal battles concerning the preservation of the resources of the Sahara and human rights issues.
Coordinator with the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), created in 1991, Khadad was a "figure of Sahrawi diplomacy".
