Rotten Fish and Health Hazards: Tangier Port Restaurants Under Fire for Hygiene Violations

The authorities recently conducted an inspection operation in the port of Tangier, noting the presence of a significant quantity of spoiled fish, as well as shortcomings in terms of hygiene in the port’s restaurants.

During this operation carried out last week, the inspectors noted irregularities in the storage and hygiene of the food served, in violation of the environmental and health standards in force. The discovery of these fish unfit for consumption in the restaurants of the port of Tangier has relaunched the debate on the quality of the food served and the health safety in this area, relays Al Akhbar.

A few months ago, two restaurants in the same port, accused of fraud against tourists, overcharging and repeated breaches of hygiene, had been closed by court decision and deprived of their operating license. Despite this sanction and the seals affixed to their premises, the two establishments have, against all expectations, resumed service. An illegal reopening that has not failed to arouse the astonishment of the clientele and the other establishment managers.

Faced with this anarchy, voices are rising to demand the opening of an investigation into this unauthorized reopening, as well as the relocation of restaurants outside the fishing port to facilitate traffic, particularly on the main axis of Merkala. The waste management by these restaurants is also problematic. An explosion of the sewage pipes, clogged by the waste from these same establishments, had revealed the poor management of the waste.
