Polisario Challenges Morocco’s Autonomy Plan: Sahara Conflict Intensifies

The Polisario has stated that the right to self-determination is the "just and consensual solution to resolve the conflict" in the Sahara, in response to King Mohammed VI who, in his latest Throne speech, reaffirmed his commitment to reaching a "consensual solution" and welcomed the "growing international support" for Morocco’s autonomy plan for this territory.
In a statement, the Ministry of Information of the "Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR)" and the Polisario Front have stressed that the clearly expressed willingness of Mohammed VI to reach a "consensual solution" in which there is "neither winner nor loser, while preserving the dignity of all parties", "must be part of the consensual solution signed with the Polisario Front in 1991, after 16 years of war, under the auspices of the UN and the African Union".
This solution must be "democratic, in accordance with international law, which recognizes the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence, and at the same time does not recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara," they explain in the note relayed by SPS, the Sahrawi press agency.
"If Morocco is truly sincere and has good intentions, we are fully prepared to engage in direct, serious and credible negotiations, without dictates or preconditions, under the auspices of the United Nations, to reach a just and consensual solution that respects the requirements of international legality and the legal nature of the Western Sahara issue, as a decolonization issue," they insist.
On Tuesday, in his speech on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of his accession to the throne, King Mohammed VI welcomed the growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara. After Spain and France, the United Kingdom and Portugal have recently expressed their position in favor of Morocco on this Sahara issue, recalls Europa Press.
