US Reaffirms Morocco's Key Role in Global Counter-Terrorism Efforts During Pompeo Visit

On the sidelines of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s visit to Rabat, the US State Department reiterated the United States’ determination to work alongside Morocco to effectively ensure the security and prosperity of the two countries.

"Our friendship has endured. Together, we seek to unlock the potential of all our citizens to further ensure the prosperity and security of our two countries," the US State Department said in a statement titled: "Secretary Pompeo’s Visit to Morocco: Advancing Economic and Security Cooperation".

The first country to have recognized the United States diplomatically in 1777, the Kingdom had opened its ports to ships of the new American nation. To date, Morocco is the only African country to have concluded a free trade agreement with the United States.

On the security front, Morocco remains and remains an ally of Uncle Sam’s country with which it maintains close military cooperation. Together, they organize joint exercises and training programs. "Under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco is an essential actor in the global fight against terrorism," the same source affirms. Moreover, its contribution at the regional and even international level is immeasurable.

According to the State Department, the Kingdom provides more than 2,000 troops to UN peacekeeping operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic... With more than 5,000 volunteers over the past 55 years, Morocco hosts the oldest and largest American Peace Corps program in the region.
