US and Morocco Strengthen Alliance to Counter Iranian Influence in Africa

The United States and Morocco discussed the "danger posed by Iran and its satellites" on October 22 in Washington. Consequently, the two parties intend to deploy subsequent means to curb this influence in North and West Africa.
The cooperative efforts to combat attempts to spread Iranian influence in the region, including in North and West Africa, were scrutinized during the work of the 4th session of the Strategic Dialogue between Morocco and the United States, according to a joint statement.
On this occasion, Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, and Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State, committed to maintaining their cooperation to advance common interests in regional stability and defeat terrorist groups, including AQIM and the Islamic State.
In this vein, the two parties held discussions on the joint efforts to be deployed to combat terrorism in Africa and, in particular, to definitively defeat the terrorist group, Daesh, by strengthening the security services’ capacities in the region, including through a common platform for security cooperation.
Furthermore, Mike Pompeo thanked Morocco, a stable partner and provider of security, for its leadership at the head of the Global Forum on Counterterrorism and for its leading role within the Global Coalition to Defeat Daesh.
