Rabies Alert: Moroccan Dog Sparks Outbreak Concerns in Spanish Enclave

A case of rabies was confirmed in Melilla on May 23, involving a dog from Morocco. This is the first case detected in Spain this year.
According to information from the Ministry of Social Policies, Public Health and Animal Welfare, the animal was first spotted on May 13, but was only captured the following day.
During its wandering period in the city, the dog bit two other dogs. These are not the only victims of this dog infected with rabies. According to the latest reports consulted by Animal’s Health, three people were also bitten by the animal. These people are members of the staff of the center where the animal was placed after its capture.
In addition, an investigation is underway to determine if there was contact with a fourth person. The bitten people were reported to be vaccinated against rabies. As for the two attacked dogs, they are also vaccinated and will have to undergo a booster vaccination and a quarantine period in accordance with the contingency plan for rabies.
