Rabat Taxi Drivers Jailed After High-Speed Chase of Suspected Ride-Hailing Driver

Five taxi drivers operating in Rabat were placed in pre-trial detention at the Tamesna prison on Saturday evening. The Attorney General of the King near the Court of Appeal of the capital decided to bring them before the investigating judge, who ordered their immediate incarceration.
At the origin of this case, a video posted on the internet shows a chase between blue taxis from Rabat and a Peugeot car. The scene takes place near the Prince Moulay Abdellah complex, at the entrance to the highway leading to Casablanca.
Last Thursday, the taxi drivers chased the driver of the private car from the bus station. They suspected him of using VTC applications. The chase could have caused a serious accident.
The police officers intervened and arrested the taxi drivers as well as the driver of the car.
This type of incident is unfortunately not uncommon in Morocco. On several occasions, private drivers have been attacked, even violently assaulted, by taxi drivers on the pretext of losing customers. Aware of the problem, the public authorities have never made a firm decision, as the taxi corporation has quite a high nuisance power in Morocco.
