Taxi Drivers Arrested After Chaotic Chase of Ride-Share Driver in Rabat
Three taxi drivers chased a VTC driver at the Rabat bus station, causing outrage among Moroccans. These four individuals were arrested and placed in police custody.
In Rabat, three taxi drivers chased a VTC driver at the Rabat bus station last Thursday, provoking the indignation of the locals. Subsequently, the city’s police intervened to put an end to this indescribable disorder. All four individuals involved were apprehended and placed in police custody.
Tensions between taxi professionals and VTC drivers are recurrent. In early December, a violent altercation between a taxi driver and a driver from a VTC booking app broke out near a luxury hotel on the Avenue des FAR. The origin of this violent brawl was a disagreement born of competition to pick up passengers in this very busy area. The altercation involved a Russian diplomat and his wife, witnesses to the scene. They had booked a trip via the app to go to the hotel. Subsequently, the law enforcement authorities intervened to defuse the situation.
In Morocco, the provision of passenger transport services via unauthorized digital applications and platforms is an activity contrary to the laws and regulations in force. In November, the Popular Movement group in the House of Representatives tabled a bill to regulate this type of transport.
