Morocco Taxi Drivers Protest New License Verification Requirement

The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has made a decision that is not well received by taxi professionals.
Thus, they are now required to provide a certificate of life of the license holder, or an official certificate confirming that he is still alive. This measure, issued by the governor of the prefecture of Oujda Angad, worries the unions. They fear that this requirement will be applied throughout the country and denounce an unfair measure that is a source of complications.
The general secretary of the Democratic Labor Union is outraged: "This decision is erroneous," recalling the difficulties related to the transfer of "grimates" (licenses) in the event of the death of the holder, especially when the heirs are absent or deceased. Faced with the protest, the taxi unions have requested an audience with the Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, to negotiate and find solutions.
The official warns against the risks of "revolt" if the measure is generalized. He also denounces the contradictions between the various circulars governing the sector and calls for greater freedom for drivers. "The professional driver who meets the conditions to benefit from the authorization has the right to it," he insists.
