Moroccan City Cracks Down on Taxi Permit Fraud, Requiring Proof of Life

In Oujda, holders of taxi operating permits, commonly called "grimates", are being asked to prove that they are indeed alive.
The city’s police prefecture has given them until the end of January to present an official document, failing which they risk losing their precious permit.
This measure, which applies to all taxi operators, whether first or second category (small or large taxi), aims to clarify the situation in a sometimes murky sector. Concretely, the operators must require the "grimates" owners a certificate of life or, failing that, a signed declaration.
The police prefecture has clearly indicated that January 31, 2023 is the deadline. After this deadline, any late-comer will definitively lose their permit. This decision comes in a tense context for the taxi sector, marked by incidents in several cities of the kingdom. There have been altercations between taxi drivers and customers, or with users of transport applications.
