King Mohammed VI Urges Dialogue with Algeria: A Bold Push for Maghreb Unity

In his Throne Speech, King Mohammed VI has once again addressed a direct message to Algeria, insistently reiterating his policy of the "outstretched hand".

Far from being a mere diplomatic formula, the call is intended as a formal invitation to a dialogue to overcome a situation that the sovereign has described as "regrettable".

Speaking in his capacity as Head of State, the monarch has emphasized the "clear and constant" nature of his position. He has recalled the foundations of this approach by describing, in the words of his speech, the neighboring people as "a brotherly people bound to the Moroccan people by age-old human and historical ties, particularly through language, religion, geography and a common destiny".

The sovereign has thus reaffirmed having "constantly extended a hand towards our Brothers in Algeria". This approach is accompanied by a concrete proposal: the establishment of a dialogue without evasion. The speech indeed evoked "Morocco’s willingness to engage in a frank and responsible dialogue; a fraternal and sincere dialogue on the various outstanding issues between the two countries".

This "unwavering attachment to the policy of the outstretched hand" is not a circumstantial posture but proceeds, as King Mohammed VI insisted, from an "inner conviction". That of the fundamental unity of the two peoples and their "common ability to overcome this situation".

Finally, the message addressed to Algiers has been placed in a broader regional perspective. For King Mohammed VI, the normalization of relations between the two heavyweights of the region is a sine qua non condition for the revival of a common project. He has thus reaffirmed his commitment to the Union of the Maghreb, saying he is convinced "that it will not be possible without the joint involvement of Morocco and Algeria, alongside the other brotherly States".
