Rabat-Salé Airport New Terminal Complete But Still Closed

After more than seven years of construction, the new terminal of Rabat-Salé airport now appears to be entirely completed. The building, designed to absorb strong growth in air traffic to the capital, remains closed to travelers pending its official inauguration.

Construction work on the new terminal of Rabat-Salé airport is complete, reports Hespress, citing an official source. The new terminal is now awaiting the setting of an opening and inauguration date. The National Airport Authority (ONDA) has not yet publicly announced its opening.

The project was launched on December 19, 2018 with the laying of the first stone. According to data published at the time by ONDA, the infrastructure was to occupy nearly 69,000 square meters and provide additional capacity for four million passengers per year. Road and aeronautical infrastructure were also planned around the terminal.

Seven years of work, no date

The new terminal should allow the airport to handle around five million travelers per year, compared to capacity that has become insufficient given the multiplication of connections to and from Rabat. It will be equipped with modern devices for check-in, baggage handling, security and passenger flow management.

The latest work did not only concern the building. A document from Morocco’s Aeronautical Information Service notably mentioned the connection of the new aircraft parking to the airport’s taxiways. These operations, organized in several phases, were directly linked to the new terminal project.

The announced completion ends a construction site launched more than seven years ago, but leaves one question unanswered: when will the first travelers actually be able to use the new facility? At this stage, no official opening date has been communicated by ONDA.
