US Pushes for Revival of Gibraltar Tunnel Project Linking Europe and Africa

The United States would be putting pressure on Morocco and Spain to revive the old project to build a tunnel in the Strait of Gibraltar that will connect Europe to Africa. The technical studies have already been carried out and updated and the project could start very soon.

This tunnel in the strait will help promote trade and European and North American influence on the African continent, says Voto en Blanco, specifying that Washington is counting on Morocco to carry out this strategic project supported by Spain and the rest of Europe. The United States places at the heart of this project the port of Tanger-Med, which is in full growth and threatens the Spanish freight ports, particularly the port of Algeciras.

SECEGSA, the Spanish public company, partner of SNED in Morocco (National Company for Studies of the Strait of Gibraltar), and CETMO (Center for Transport Studies for the Western Mediterranean), have carried out studies on the underwater tunnel of the strait. But the project is struggling to take shape due to various problems and sensitivities.

Morocco wants to strengthen its trade ties with the United Kingdom thanks to this underwater tunnel and does not want the connection to be established in Spain. For its part, Spain demands control of the European part of the tunnel. But beyond these disputes, the issue of currents and the consistency of the seabed is also one of the technical difficulties blocking the start of the project.
